After two and a half decades building a Pediatric Diagnostic Center and Hospital for Children we are now re-focusing on BD2K. In order to best serve the patients depending on the safety net, we have expanded our research to adults with asthma, COPD, and diabetes, and to better serve the research community by creating patient registries to draw from. We are partnering with our research partners from USC, UCLA, Rand Corporation, Abt and Associates, UCSF, and acquiring more assets in biostatistics, psychology, biomedical engineering, and clinical trial design. We are re-visiting old friends from Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Electronic Sensor Technology, and new friends from Gentag, Gilead, PARI. We are participating in trials with Merck, Astra Zeneca, and Glaxo-Smith-Kline. We are completing projects looking at the effects of critical congenital heart disease in the newborn – how it affects parents and siblings – decades after the event. We are concentrating on tools to assess and improve adherence in chronic disease – partnering with the American Academy of Pediatrics in a quality improvement project for pediatricians in eight counties and with CareMessage to utilize the cellphone to improve care for COPD and diabetes. After our recent visit to CalTech’s Atheneum Club for Technolink, we look forward to partnering with big data collected for transportation security, data collection for airplanes that mimics our work with the LifeShirt, oil exploration data sets, and others – to understand how we can turn Big Data To Knowledge.
